CALM Conversations Suicide Intervention Training

CALM is a one day workshop that teaches four key actions; Connect, Ask, Listen Monitor to build confidence, knowledge and skills that equip participants to start a positive and potentially life-saving conversation about suicide. CALM empowers participants to recognise and respond to suicide risk and to support someone through stages of positive intervention, the development of a safety plan and linkingto other services for further help.

This course is presented by fully accredited and qualified trainers with experience in social welfare and counselling services.

Course Overview

Participants will learn;

  • How to recognise signs that someone may be thinking about suicide.
  • How to have a CALM conversation and build trust.
  • How to ask about Suicide.
  • How to talk about stressors and concerns.
  • how to empower and reconnect a person to themselves and their lives.
  • How to assist identifying options other than suicide.
  • how to develop a safety plan and link a person to supports and services.
  • How to use the CALM model to guide oyu through four stages of suicide intervention.

Participants will receive;

  • A 24-page workbook and wallet card including knowledge and skills to guide you through the conversation.
  • A list of National Helplines and websites to assist you.
  • Access to the “Be Calm” app that you can use during and intervention
  • the “Be Safe” app or worksheet for the person needing hope to create and record their safety plan.
  • Reading material to further your own understanding and development.
  • A printed certificate of attendance.

Course Outline

  • Recognize the impact of Suicide and distinguish between myths and facts. 
  • Examine MI theory and apply MI communication skills in suicide prevention.
  • Examine Recovery Oriented practice and employ these principles in suicide prevention. 
  • Debate identifying risk factors, warning signs, protective factors versus identifying life stressors in suicide prevention and review recent research. 
  • Recognise CALM model of intervention.
  • Practice OARS skills to connect with person at risk.  
  • Practice how to ask about suicide and discuss stigma associated with concept of suicide.
